Graphene and ceramic coatings both promise gloss, water beading in the glossary and protection for the paint – but they are not the same product in different packaging. A classic ceramic coating cures into a hard layer, needs extensive preparation and is often applied by professionals. Today, graphene is mostly found in spray sealants in the glossary and coatings that are easier to apply. Which suits you better depends on how much time and money you want to invest and what condition your paint is in.

In this article you'll learn what is behind both terms, how long the coatings last, what they cost and what a graphene spray sealant such as GLOSSDOC GRAPHEN FX-SPRAY is suited for.

Graphene vs. ceramic coating: what is the difference?

A ceramic coating is based on silicon dioxide (SiO₂). After application it reacts with the humidity in the air and cures into a thin, hard and smooth layer on the clear coat. It usually lasts much longer than wax but is unforgiving: whatever is under the layer when it is applied – scratches, holograms, dirt – gets sealed in.

Graphene is carbon in a layer just one atom thick. In car care it is added to sealants that form a smooth, water-repellent protective film. Graphene products come in different forms – from curing coatings applied much like a ceramic coating to spray sealants for regular care. How long a graphene product lasts therefore depends heavily on its type, not just on the active ingredient.

The main differences at a glance:

  • Structure: ceramic cures into a hard layer. A graphene spray sealant puts a thin protective care film on the paint.
  • Preparation: for ceramic, the paint usually has to be washed, decontaminated, polished and degreased. A spray sealant goes on freshly washed, dry paint.
  • Application: ceramic needs time, a dust-free environment and precise work so that no streaks cure in. With a spray sealant you spray it on, spread it and buff.
  • Topping up: you can add a spray sealant at any time. A ceramic layer is usually maintained for years and only renewed when needed.

How long do graphene and ceramic coatings last?

For ceramic coatings, manufacturers and detailers often state durability of several years. Whether that is achieved depends on the preparation, the layer thickness, the weather and above all on the care: car washes with hard brushes and aggressive cleaners shorten any coating's life.

For GLOSSDOC GRAPHEN FX-SPRAY, the product page says: with normal use it provides protection for several weeks to months, depending on use, weather and care. Its real strength lies elsewhere, though: it is designed to top up existing protective layers and extend their life. If you already have a ceramic coating, you don't have to choose between the two – the graphene spray complements it in your regular care.

What does a graphene or ceramic coating cost?

In terms of cost, the two routes differ mainly in labour:

  • Ceramic coating at a detailer: the biggest item is the paint correction beforehand. Quotes vary widely depending on the paint condition, vehicle size and number of layers – so always get a quote for your car.
  • DIY ceramic coating: the material is cheaper, but you also need a polisher, polishes, pads and several hours to days of work. Without experience in machine polishing, the risk of sealing defects under the layer is high.
  • Graphene spray sealant: all you need is the spray and clean microfibre cloths. You'll find the current price on the product page. The time involved is about that of a normal wash.

Which coating suits when?

A ceramic coating is worth it if the paint is being professionally detailed anyway, the car will be kept for a long time and you want maximum durability. A graphene spray sealant suits you if you want deep gloss and water beading without a polisher and a big time investment, if you care for an everyday car regularly or if you want to keep an existing coating fresh.

Our range includes two spray sealants: GRAPHEN FX-SPRAY relies on graphene technology for intense depth of gloss, improved hydrophobic properties and a protective film against water, dirt and UV radiation. AQUA SHIELD, the lotus effect for your car, is the quick spray sealant (more on the lotus effect in the glossary) for paint, glass, wheels and plastics and, according to the product description, ideal for topping up and boosting ceramic, nano and wax sealants. You'll find both in the Paint Protection & Sealant category.

Applying a graphene spray sealant properly

  1. Wash thoroughly: pre-wash in the glossary, hand wash, rinse – as described in our car wash guide.

  2. Dry and ideally degrease: according to the product page, a thorough wash and ideally degreasing improve the adhesion and durability of the protective film.

  3. Work in the shade: only seal cool, dry paint and never in direct sunlight.

  4. Spray on thinly and spread: work panel by panel and spread evenly with a soft microfibre cloth, for example the Detailing Microfibre Cloth Pink, which is made for sealants and waxes.

  5. Buff: buff with a dry side of the cloth until no streaks are visible.

Follow the application and safety information on the label.

Frequently asked questions

Is graphene better than ceramic?

Not across the board. It depends on the product: a curing ceramic coating and a graphene spray sealant have different jobs. One is a long-term base layer, the other quick protection and a top-up for regular care.

Can I apply GRAPHEN FX-SPRAY on top of a ceramic coating?

Yes, that is what it is designed for: it complements existing protective layers, tops them up and extends their life.

What does "nano graphene" mean?

The term is used in different ways and usually means that graphene is contained in a very fine form in a sealant. What matters for you is the application, durability and care effort of the specific product.

When can a sealed car go through a car wash?

Only once the sealant has fully cured. For a spray sealant the time is on the label; for a ceramic coating it is given by the manufacturer or your detailer. Until then, don’t wash the car and protect it from rain where possible. Even afterwards: car washes with hard brushes and aggressive cleaners wear any sealant down faster, while a gentle hand wash extends its life.

How do I wash a sealed car?

With a gentle car shampoo such as BLUE OCEAN and a soft wash mitt in the glossary, ideally after a snow foam pre-wash. Aggressive cleaners and hard car wash brushes wear down any sealant faster.
