Snow foam goes on before the actual hand wash: you spray the foam onto the pre-rinsed, cool car, leave it to dwell for a few minutes without letting it dry, and then rinse it off thoroughly. A foam lance on a pressure washer gives you the thickest foam. A pump sprayer or spray bottle works too, but the foam is thinner. What matters most is not the tool but the order: loosen the dirt and rinse it away first, then touch the paint with the wash mitt in the glossary.
How snow foam works as a pre-wash
Most wash scratches happen when sand, dust and insect residue are rubbed across the paint by the mitt. This is exactly where the pre-wash comes in: snow foam settles on the surface as a dense foam, softens loose dirt and binds it. When you rinse, much of it runs off with the foam before you have even touched the paint.
GLOSSDOC SNOW FOAM Pre-Wash Foam 500 ml is made for precisely this step: it loosens dirt, dust and insect residue and forms a clinging foam that acts as a lubricating film between dirt and paint. On heavily soiled cars, however, it does not replace the hand wash. Snow foam is the first step, not the only one.
Snow foam gun, foam lance or spray bottle?
Whether you search for a snow foam gun, foam lance or foam cannon, you usually mean the same tool: an attachment for the pressure washer with its own bottle. It mixes the concentrate with water and air to create dense foam. There are two other options as well:
- Foam lance on a pressure washer: the thickest, longest-clinging foam and the quickest coverage on large panels. You need a pressure washer with a matching connector.
- Foam gun for a garden hose: works without a pressure washer, but the foam is noticeably wetter and runs off faster.
- Pump sprayer or spray bottle: a pump pressure sprayer with a foam nozzle produces usable foam, a simple spray bottle more of a wet film. Both are well suited to smaller areas such as the front, sills or door shuts if you have no pressure washer.
Using it from a bucket is also possible, but produces less dense foam. How much concentrate goes into which device is stated on the label. Follow those instructions rather than dosing by feel.
Applying snow foam step by step
- Wash in the shade and only when the paint is cool. In the sun the foam dries too quickly.
- Rinse the car from top to bottom with clean water to remove loose dust.
- Apply the foam from bottom to top. That way no dry patches remain, and the heavily soiled lower areas get the longest dwell time.
- Let the foam dwell for a few minutes. It must not dry. If it turns matt or dry anywhere, rinse earlier.
- Rinse thoroughly from top to bottom. With a pressure washer, keep a sufficient distance from paint, rubber seals and stickers.
Washing your car properly: the right order
Snow foam is only one part of the wash. This order has proven itself because you never carry dirt from one area to the next:
- Wheels and tyres first. According to the product page, you spray GLOSSDOC Wheel Cleaner 600 ml on from a distance of approx. 15–20 cm, leave it to work briefly without letting it dry, and rinse with clean water. Use separate brushes and cloths for the wheels.
- Pre-rinse the bodywork.
- Apply snow foam, let it dwell, rinse.
- Hand wash using the two-bucket method with a car shampoo such as GLOSSDOC BLUE OCEAN The Car Shampoo 500 ml, always from top to bottom.
- Rinse thoroughly.
- Dry before water spots form, for example with the GLOSSDOC Car Drying Towel Twisted Loop Red XXL.
- Optionally protect: a spray sealant in the glossary such as GLOSSDOC AQUA SHIELD The Lotus Effect 500 ml only bonds properly to clean paint.
You will find detailed instructions for the hand wash in our guide to the car wash.
Washing your car without scratches: what snow foam can do
Snow foam lowers the risk of scratches because less dirt is on the paint when the mitt touches it. The wash only becomes scratch-free when everything else is right too: a clean wash mitt, a second bucket for rinsing, straight movements instead of circles, and clean cloths. A cloth that has fallen on the ground no longer belongs on the paint but in the wash. You can read how to care for cloths properly in our guide How to wash microfibre cloths properly.
Washing your car properly at a self-service wash bay
Many self-service wash bays do not allow you to bring your own cleaning products, foam lances or buckets. So ask the operator beforehand whether, and which, of your own products you may use, and follow the notices on site. If it is permitted:
- Prepare everything before the timer starts: snow foam mixed, wheel brush and wash mitt to hand.
- Use the bay's clear-water or rinse programme for pre-rinsing and rinsing.
- Do not use the bay's wash brush on the paint. You do not know what dirt the previous user left in it.
- If possible, dry the car in a parking space outside the bay so you can work without time pressure.
Washing your car at home
Whether you may wash your car in front of your house, on the street or on the drive is not regulated uniformly in Germany. It is often restricted because dirt, oil and cleaning products should not enter the sewer system or the soil unfiltered. Check the local rules with your municipality beforehand and follow them. We cannot give a binding answer for where you live here. Where washing is not permitted, a wash bay with waste-water treatment is the better choice.
You will find everything for the wash in our Wash & Pre-Wash category, and cloths and equipment under Accessories.
Frequently asked questions
Can I use normal car shampoo as snow foam?
Car shampoo and snow foam do different jobs. Shampoo is intended for the hand wash with a mitt, where it provides lubrication; snow foam is for the touchless pre-wash in the glossary. The two complement each other: first the foam, then the shampoo in the bucket.
How do I test whether my snow foam works?
Look for three things: the foam should cling to vertical panels and run off slowly, dirt should be visible in the foam as it runs off, and after rinsing there should be noticeably less dirt on the paint. If the foam runs off immediately, check the device and the mix according to the label.
How long does snow foam need to dwell?
A few minutes, but never so long that the foam dries. In warm or windy weather that happens faster, so rinse earlier.
Do I really need a pressure washer?
No. A pump sprayer, spray bottle or bucket also work; the foam is just less dense. For a thorough rinse, a garden hose with a spray nozzle is enough.
